Evaluation of practice continuity sequence

In our clip we could not include our mise-en-scene because it would not fit into the sequence, however if we were able to include the scene then it would have been the victim looking at the killer, then the dead body then the killer again. Mine and Vicky's clothes were casual however, Fay's (who played the serial killer) was wearing a Japanese school uniform which would be seen in anime. This may also be seen as cute and innocent so we played around with it to make come across as ironic and different. the makeup used for the mise-en-scene was Fay's cos play makeup which is very pretty and girly, we also used special effects makeup such as fake blood and body paints along with one small prosthetic to make the cut on my arm more realistic. The music what we used during the clip was called 'Come Play With Me' which we found on incomptech what played throughout the sequence. We also used a sound clip of a scream of a woman, we got this sound form a site called www.freesound.com.

The lighting in our clip varied as well as some attempt to adjust the lighting when editing, however the lighting in the room was different to the lighting out in the hallway, this is because the IOS on the camera needed to be changed as well as maybe some adjustments. The IOS in the hallway needed to be put down a little bit to make it similar to the lighting in the room. If we were able to film this again then we would go back and adjust the camera IOS for better lighting quality.

For this little project we used a low angle on Vicky picking up the knife when it was dropped getting her feet into the shot, we also used a low angle when Vicky fell to the floor as well as the camera movement. However we did not use any high angles however if we were to do this again then we would plan a structure to use a high angle shot possibly of Fay.

The shot distances what we used in our clip we used a few differentiated shot distances because we used one or two wide shots to show what was happening and in that area. We also used an extreme close up on Fay's eyes when Vicky was being stabbed, in the clip we also used a few mid shots, for example when Fay was standing behind Vicky just before the killing scene to show what was happening by using a different shot in the sequence.

The only camera movement we used was when Vicky fell to the floor after the last killing scene, we decided to allow the camera to fall with Vicky to the floor for Fay to then walk away with her feet in the shot. For this camera movement was a hand held tracking shot to follow the characters movement to the floor.

When editing the clips together, we decided to include one dissolves and a wipe effect to go to the scene of finding the dead body. We inserted a dissolve when Vicky was on the phone in shot 10 to show some time passing in a short space of time which is also known as a meanwhile shot. We also used one fade out when Fay walked up behind Vicky. As she had the knife in her hand when Vicky had the knife in her hand there was a big jump between two scenes so we used another fade to make the two scene run together smoothly. We also used a fade to black tool at the end of the sequence as Fay walked away from the dead bodies, with the music 'Come Play With Me' still playing.

The continuity system

180 degree rule:  We broke the 180 degree rule by using it as 360 degrees instead however we felt we had to to do what we needed to do in order for it to flow the way we wanted. If we were to go back and do this again then we would be more careful with this rule and take into more consideration.

Establishing shots: In our video we used a variety of different shots to establish the scene and the area. We used an establishing shot when Vicky was walking through the corridor as she heard the scream. We used a few establishing shots because we were aiming to build up suspense towards the end of the video.

Match cuts on action: We didn't use any match cuts on action in our video because we couldn't think of a good placement for the shot however if we were to do this task again then we would plan the structure with more care and more time.

Eye line match cuts: We only used one eye line match cuts just before Vicky's death scene of Fay's eyes. the cut looked too jumpy from the scene without and with the added fake blood so we used the extreme close up of Fay's eyes in between to make it flow better.

Point of view shots: We used one point of view shot when Vicky was looking at the door so we had a shot of her walking through the corridor then her point of view when she heard the woman's scream.

Shot reverse shot: We didn't use a shot reverse shot because we had already broke the 180 degree rule but if we were to do this task again then we would stick by that rule and include a shot reverse shot, preferably when Fay walks behind Vicky before the second death scene.

Summary

Overall i think that our video has a good concept but i feel that it does need some changes as well as some more editing.
For example, we needed to edit the lighting from the room W13 and in the hallway because the IOS on the camera was too high when we were filming in the corridor but it was too low when we were in W13 aswell as the natural lighting.
If we were to do this again then we would take into more consideration about the 180 degree rule when filming as this was forgotten about whilst filming.
